April - 2012
Dear Electronics Assembly Colleague:
During my high schooler's spring break we "road tripped" visiting 5 different colleges throughout the South East in a little over a week putting on 2,200 miles on the road with the family. The nice weather complemented the "warmth" we felt from the people we visited.
I was excited for the opportunities college-bound technical students are now getting. Many of the schools were trumpeting that undergrads could earn a little money while working for professors doing research as undergrads.
The other thing that struck me was the scale and the "boom" of college spending on infrastructure that has occurred in the last 10-15 years. There were many new buildings, dorms, labs and student unions all outfitted with current technology. The rampant college price inflation and "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality was right there on display. (Check out the unbelievable food bar at one of the schools above!)
We are in the throws of planning this year's technical symposium on BGA assembly/repair. We will have excellent speakers on area array DFM, placement, inspection, cleaning and rework. Mark your calendars for August 21st.
I also invite you to the IMAPs Chicago event on April 10th where I will be leading a discussion on "QFN placement and rework."
President, BEST Inc.
BEST has developed a unique new method for NPI stepped stencils. In this approach the "step" is created by BEST "StencilQuik(TM)" flexible permanent adhesive stencils. These are are cut out in areas of the stencil and adhered to those areas requiring larger solder paste volumes. Step up heights are a few mils up to 8 mils.
Unlike other stepped stencil options this stencil approach is delivered in a few days.

BEST has the only solder training vehicle on wheels-the BEST Mobile Training Center or MTC. The BEST MTC provides (10) complete soldering stations including microscopes, digital monitors, fume extraction and all of the professional hand soldering tools found in electronics manufacturing. BEST instructors will drive the vehicle to your location, plug into plant power (or we can rent a generator) and provide a complete solder training experience.
The benefits of this solder training experience are:
- Professional soldering materials
- No travel costs for the trainees
- Professional instruction
- No distractions while still being "on site"

|Dye and Pry|
|Dye and pry testing is a first level troubleshooting process for determining the integrity of the solder joints at the level 1 interconnect. This destructive test will tell us the integrity of the solder joint. Dye is squirted underneath a package, it is allowed to flow underneath the device under vacuum. The device is then pried off and the observations and photos help to determine the problem interconnects. |
