Norman Mier Jr.

Norm - New PicNorman is a U.S. Marine Corp. retired veteran with over 20 years of experience in the electronics rework and repair industry. He received his training through the Navy's Micro Miniature (2M) Electronic Repair Program. He has progressed through every level of rework and repair recognized in the industry. Norman has also earned the highest certifications awarded by IPC in electronics training, being certified as a Master Instructor in IPC A-610, IPC J-STD-001D, IPC/WHMA-A-620 and IPC 7711/7721.

He has worked through BEST for several electronics industry leaders and created tailored courses for their equipment. This also includes providing training to technicians and engineers in surface mount and advanced surface mount technology. The knowledge Norm has brought to these companies has been invaluable to their process improvement efforts. James Barnhart

James - New PicJames Barnhart started as a 2M Miniature/Mico-miniature repair technician in 1986 and progressed to being an 'A' level instructor in the Navy's 2M program. He has worked in the electronics field since the mid 80's and trained many technicians in the repair of PCB's and was a trainer of new instructors for the Navy's 2M program. During his time as an instructor he was involved in the rewriting of the 2M courses and adding SMT repair techniques. Jodi Johnson

Jodi - New PicJodi comes to BEST with over 25 years of extensive soldering experience. She has worked in all areas of the electronics industry, from assembly to PCB rework/repair and inspection. Jodi brings excitement and personality to every class that she teaches. Whether she's teaching a beginner level course such as Soldering 101 or an advanced IPC course like IPC 7711/21, Jodi has the ability to bring her real world experiences to the classroom and relate to students on a personal level. Jodi is a MIT in the IPC J-STD-001, IPC-A-610, and IPC 7711/21 certifications. When Jodi isn't training, she's assisting the BEST in-house technicians with various rework projects and making improvements to the production processes at BEST. Francisco Fourcade

Francisco FourcadeFrancisco is a bilingual, South American born instructor. He has been instructing students in English and Spanish for 5+ years, first with a well known soldering equipment supplier and then as an independent soldering consultant. Francisco has taught IPC classes in both English and Spanish. He has taught technicians at companies such as Motorola, Rockwell Collins, Lockheed Martin and Honeywell. Ruffin Blackard

Ruffin BlackhardRuffin spent the first 16 years of his career helping two small original equipment manufacturers support their products as their national service manager. He spent a few years as a systems engineer responsible for integrating barcode reading and tracking equipment into industrial manufacturing assembly lines. His first professional solder training came from Pace, Inc. in the mid 90's followed by a role as an IPC trainer at Circuit Technology. Ruffin assisted a local staffing company develop a solder training program to train workers so they could be very effective in their duties where the staffing agency placed them.     The IPC J-STD-001 Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies has become the authority for electronics assembly manufacturing. The standard describes materials, methods and verification criteria for producing high quality soldered interconnections. The BEST SMT Assembly Class provides for a practical overview of the SMT assembly process while the 101 classes are designed for those unfamiliar with the basics of hand soldering.

    The IPC-A-610 Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies IPC certification program relies on the  most widely-used specification published by the IPC for the electronics manufacturing industry. This publication is a visual document that provides comprehensive accept/reject criteria for the handling of electronic assemblies, mechanical assemblies, component installation, location, orientation, soldering, cleanliness of assemblies, marking of assemblies, coatings, laminate conditions, discrete wiring assembly and surface mount assemblies. If you need IPC certification training for operators or instructors then BEST is your source.Our hands-on inspection course takes those with specification knowledge and deals with the real world challenges of PCB inspection in a hands-on class.

    In addition to the IPC certification classes, BEST offers customized classes to meet your specific training needs. All of our classes are in accordance with the latest IPC-7711 and 7721 standards. All of the BEST (non-IPC) classes are approximately 85% hands-on, and are designed to dramatically raise the skill set of the student by emphasizing correct soldering techniques. Students are evaluated on their hands-on work, as opposed to an administrative test. This method has been proven to help the student retain the information he/she has learned, and ensure that they can accomplish the rework tasks required for their job function.

    Wire Harness Courses

    IPC/WHMA-A-620 is an industry consensus standard for cable and wire harness fabrication and installation used by both military and commercial contractors. Classes of products are defined and include criteria for Target, Acceptable, Process Indicator and Defect conditions to support the collection of visual quality acceptability requirements for each class. Our Cables and Wire Harness Course will provide you with hands-on training not provided in the 620 certification program. Finally, the Wires and Terminals 101 class is for those unfamiliar with hand soldering teaching the students the skills of crimping, stripping, tinning and soldering to terminals amongst others.

    PCB Inspection (Bare Board) Courses

    The IPC-A-600 specification for rigid printed boards is the standard for PCB workmanship quality. IPC certification training in this program involves learning the acceptance criteria on all types of printed board surface and internal conditions. The knowledge of this criteria is important to both the PCB manufacturer and assembler. Your knowledge will improve your understanding of printed board quality issues while improving communication between you and your PCB manufacturer. In addition, the IPC-6012 IPC certification training program is a comprehensive program that will develop your understanding of design, specifications, fabrication and inspection of printed circuit boards (PCBs). 

     
    Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Courses

    BEST instructors teach the basic concepts of ESD: how it occurs, proper precautionary measures required to avoid electronic damage to sensitive electronic components, how to control ESD by working in ESD protected areas and workstations, proper mitigation techniques, proper handling techniques and use of personal grounding devices.

    Lead-Free Courses

    In addition, BEST offers a hands-on series of lead-free soldering courses for technicians, operators and engineers on a broad array of lead-free soldering topics. Our beginning level lead-free orientation course is intended for everyone in the supply chain from purchasing to program management through receiving. Additional courses are offered in lead-free rework, wave soldering and SMT manufacturing. These courses are intended for process engineers and technicians and are designed as a more in-depth look at the issues in these process areas. Each of the students who participate in this course are required to take a proficiency test and will only get a "passing grade" if they complete the test with 80% correct answers:
