Dear Electronics Assembly Colleague:
Fall colors are here, the bike gear has changed and the vegetable gardens have been cleared out and we begin to
harvest apples and pumpkins. After picking the last of the garden tomatoes I experimented with a tomato and spinach soup that was very flavorful and full of vitamins from the garden.

When removing through hole parts from high thermal mass boards, solder fountains are often employed in order to get a connector, high voltage capacitor or other large through hole part removed. These high tin content solder fountains tend to quickly erode the copper from the PTHs of the printed circuit board. The tin readily and easily solubilizes the copper-especially at the elevated pot temperatures found in lead free alloys.
There are a variety of methods to be employed in facing these challenging rework projects.

When we perform BGA rework there is a myriad of board types and conditions we face. For some clients the lot size is one while in other cases it is several thousand. In either case getting to the right thermal profile is critical to getting the yield to the highest level possible.
For small lot sizes we use our best judgement and use the information we gain from the removal of the device along with our vast library of profiles to perform the device removal and replacement. In other cases you have the time and due to the critical nature of your work a profile is established by sacrificing a board and part for the proper thermal profiling of the part. Find out more
