BEST personnel are continuing to bring together information and
resources on PCB rework, repair and electronics assembly. This month
we are debuting several resources for you to use with respect to PCB
repairs. In this issue of our newsletter we will show you where to
find the beginning of our library of PCB repairs. In this added
section of the BEST web site (www.solder.net) you can find a brief
process description of the repair procedures and examples of BEST
professional repairs. BEST will be active in presenting its
capabilities in July at a Chicago area Imbedded Systems conference
(see registration link below)

Lead Free Roadmap from BEST
BEST Finalizes Lead Free Roadmap The BEST team has
been busy formalizing its lead free implementation roadmap
outlining how we will respond to lead-free service work, how
we will instruct on lead-free processes and how we will deal
with lead-free product requirements.
BEST has been responsive to the beginning "wave" of customer
requirements for working on lead-free circuit boards. The
services that have been impacted the most due to lead-free
implementation are rework & repair services and prototype
builds. The elimination of tin/lead solder is beginning to
be demonstrated by the type of rework, repair and prototype
builds worked on by BEST.
BEST is and will continue to be providing lead free
processing services for three groups of customers: those
that require rework of assemblies manufactured with tin/lead
solder, those that require rework of assemblies with both
tin/lead and lead-free solders and those that require rework
of assemblies with lead- free solder only. Our lead free
roadmap defines how we will tightly control the process and
materials for each of these customer types.
Gold fingers are prone to damage as they are on the
periphery of the circuit board. In addition, they are prone
to solder splash during the wave soldering process. When
edge contacts are contaminated with solder, get scratched,
torn or are damaged, BEST repair technicians can bring them
back into specification. These contacts can either be
replaced or repaired. Our repair methods will restore your
edge contacts to their original level of performance and
reliability. BESTs' highly skilled technicians can repair
the gold fingers thereby eliminating the need to scrap the
entire board. We have custom gold finger fabrication
capabilities for those higher volume repair jobs in order to
minimize the turn-around time and keep repair costs to a
minimum. BEST now has a fixed gold finger repair
price of only $15 regardless of the number of goldfingers
needing repair! Call for more details.
BEST is one of the first training centers to offer 610D
instruction for both operators and instructors. BEST master
instructors were not only part of the beta training program
but were actively involved in the committees responsible for
rewriting the document.
There have been extensive changes to the IPC A-610 with the
launch of the D revision. The document has been reformatted
in order to make it more user friendly for those employing
the criteria on the manufacturing floor as well as for
instructors teaching the requirements. Many criteria have
also changed. Significant changes in the following areas are
adressed in 610 REV D: Lead Free Visual Appearances, BGA and
MELF inspection and more!
Are you looking for a good resource which describes the
BGA rework process? BEST has recently added a
process flow description of the various BGA rework process
steps. Issues related to paste printing versus flux only
attachment, site dressing and profile determination are
detailed. Also included are the methods for handling ,
packaging and inspecting BGAs practiced by BEST. BGAs.
