Dear Subscriber;

In this edition of the BEST  newsletter  we are discussing :
  • Basics of Hand Soldering-Soldering 101 Course
  • Inflatable Solar Panel Technology
As the discussion of being more self reliant on energy gets moved to the front burner in terms of a discussion topic we bring you a cool new solar technology.

Do not miss out on two very good learning opportunities. Mark your calendars for the rework symposium that will be held on Thursday August 14th at BEST Inc in Rolling Meadows where there will be (3) very knowledgeable speakers  from OK International, VJ Technologies  as well as demonstrations from the BEST staff , Chemtronix and PACE. Hear how you should do it, see how you should do it and ask questions on how it applies to your process. The second is on lead free reballing practices which will happen on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at the DoubleTree Hotel Cleveland South in Independence, OH,.

Please mark your calendars for these informative events!

Thanks!

BEST Video Soldering Tips

BEST Instructors have put together video demonstrations of common hand soldering tips and skills. These are not designed to be in place of live one on one training where repetitive skills and subsequent one on one feedback is given. Rather, they are quick refreshers designed to be viewed if a specific skill has not been practiced in a while.

Soldering 101 and New Employee Screening/Feedback
BEST announces a new "introduction" to hand soldering skills and PCB assembly course. This class is known as Soldering 101 and is built as a 2-day "crash course" in electronics assembly covering many of the basic building block skills in this course including:
  • ESD
  • Basics of Soldering
  • Introduction to Soldering Equipment
  • Component ID
  • Throughhole Soldering of Components
  • Introduction to the SMT Process
  • SMT Soldering
  • Standards
This is a great class consisting of the quality instruction  the best in class companies have come to expect from BEST.

BEST can act as your intial employee screening and filtering agent. The instructors at BEST can give you, the employer, feedback on the proficiency , skill level and attitude of soldering technicians sitting though this class.

If you have specific questions on how this class may be able to augment your trianing or employee screening needs call Katy Radcliff at (847) 797-9250.

Inflatable Solar Panel

An English company, IDC, has announced plans to mass-produce an inflatable solar panel and make it commercially available for less than 100 pounds ($200) , a great leap forward in making green energy available to the masses.

The SolarStore panels, which inflate from a backpack into a 2 meter square, are designed to replace hot water heaters, one of the primary consumers of power in most households. Below is an illustration of how it works:

Capable of heating up to 3 full tanks of water, IDC envisions the panels being used primarily in developing nations as a cheap alternative to the hot water heaters, but points out that their system pays back its cost in six months, while other domestic solar systems take 10-20 years to return the initial investment.
In pure terms of environmental impact, IDC has an amazing product- the panel will, in each case that it replaces a hot water heater, stop the output of 0.2 tons of carbon dioxide each year, and has been designed to wear well under heavy weather.
